WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre currently have 1360 Whooper swans using the reserve with hundreds of them coming in for the daily swan feeds at 3pm and 3.30pm.

Over the next two months, Martin Mere is running a competition for our visitors to name swan ‘PD5’. Reserve Manager, Tom Clare, said: “This is the third time we have run this competition and it is extremely popular. Last year, the swan was named Sheila after the grandmother of the little girl who won the competition – it really is something that will last a lifetime.”

PD5 has a yellow ring that she got in 2013 aged 3. We know that PD5 has visited Martin Mere 4 times, and Welny once. She weighs 7.6KG and can often be seen with her sibling who is ringed as PD6. Both of these swans have arrived back at Martin Mere this winter, with PD5 arriving back on 20 October.

Tom continues: “If you want to enter the competition, pick up a swan information booklet when you visit the centre and complete an entry form. A winner will be drawn at random on 1 March.”
